From a newbie. I just acquired a slant 6 engine, stock intake manifold. after market headers, and have a chance to buy a Clifford M4500 Intake with 2/4 barrel adapter for $150. It does not appear to have the water passage mentioned for the 47-4500WH 6=8 Water Heated Intake Manifold shown on the Clifford web site. I presume the heating was added to correct a problem? Is their a fix for heating the non water heated manifold. Should I avoid this manifold? I have no experience with the engine. I have visions of experimenting with port injection in the future. Can this manifold be readily modified for the injectors.

That Clifford intake may or may not be a wise purchase. It really depends on how you intend to use the engine. Please see this post.

I have one of the Clifford heatless 4 bl.manifolds that was installed on my car when purchased, as well as a set of Clifford shorty headers. My car is cold blooded, develops carburetor ice when below 40 degrees, so one of the projects this winter has been to fix this drivability problem. I fabricated a water chamber under the carburetor using a few chunks of 1/2' aluminum and two fittings from the hardware store. The 4160 390 cfm Holley's electric choke will now be controlled by a thermister Holley part number 45-267 so that it doesn't pull off too quickly. I have yet to try it all out, as my head is still at the machine shop. Here is a thread from a few weeks ago discussing this project. The deleted photos are the same as these first two below:

Started with this on the underside of manifold, note the precast well with taped bolt holes.

Two pieces of 1/2' aluminum bolted together forming a small coolant filled chamber.

Wow! The responses are fast & helpful. This mod to add heating really looks great but may be a little more than I want to take on. Based on the totality of the feedback to my post I think I will pass on the Clifford, no water passage manifold for now. I thought it an opportunity to add performance and save money but my Slant six project is a little ways down in my project queue. Next in order is a Pontiac SOHC 6, Sprint intended for my 1937 Pontiac. I just can't get enough of unique inline engines I guess. I sure am impressed with the information and responses on this forum! Thanks all!

I have always thought respectfully of the Pontiac and Jeep OHC Sixes, and really wish Chrysler had funded the series production of the OHC Slant-6 that was engineered, developed, prototyped…and then mothballed, like most of the other neat evolutionary versions of these engines we love. :-(

Ooooo... When I was a kid in high school, Dad purchased a 66 Tempest with the one lung version of that engine in it. I thought it was the latest & greatest at the time. Fast forward to a car show last summer. Someone showed up with a thirties vintage Pontiac mild hot rod powered by a SOHC PMD 6. It was the first one I have seen in 40 years, such a cool application... The Sprint rendition should be very nice to drive.

For you young'ens out there in Slant Land, the Sprint SOHC engine had all the ingredients of a Hyper Pack with a milder cam, and less flamboyant intake, making around 215 hp.

See what can be done with one now here.

The SOHC Poncho was a cool engine, my first encounter was my math teachers in high school. He loaned it to a class to teach us how do do a tune up, I still have the distributer cap somewere, I used it as a pencil holder.
