What would be the best way to shorten the e-brake "loop" cable in a 6 Dart. The 8 1/4 rear I just installed had good e-brake cables in the backing plates so I used them and now the cable is too long that connects the two sides. I'd love to swage (spell much?) new balls on one end but don't know how to g about this. Would a simple hardware store wire rope coupling do the job in a reliable/safe manner or should I go about this another way?

You don't, not without special tooling at least. Go get the brake cables from your old rear axle and swap them into the 8 1/4.

Waaaaaaay too much work at this point. I need an easier fix. the ols cables were in very poor shape and if I was going to go through the trouble of tearing all the brakes off the 8 1/4 that I just put on and tearing off the old cables I'd still feel like I have lousy cables in which case I would forgo the old ones and replace-w-new IF I could find them which is doubtful.
I'm thinking I'll come across something that will allow me to safely shorten the one loop that bridges the rear wheels.

Like Sandy says the cable clamps work great. I used 2. That was 15 years ago, the cable finely rusted threw due to Ohio's salted roads.

I agree case in point - My 78 CL Regal SE lost its rear wheel cylinders - shopped around on the net very expensive $40 each excluding shipping.... so I decide to have them relined new pistoms ,mmad - wnt to the Brake guys the guy gave it one look turned around and too two of the shelf for ...$40 total - the correct PBR OE part - now how is this possible?.. FORD still use these with their imperial threads on the 2008 model Ford Bantam LDV

Was able to source ALL the brake hardware this way
