Post subject:  What do I need?????

Hey All, Please forgive me if this has been answered many times. I am still new here and new to the Slant 6.
I will be rebuilding my motor later this summer and wonder what parts should I be shopping for. A few answers before you tell me what I need.

71 Swinger 2dr, 225 1 bbl, head is from later year 81+ not sure of block yet. I believe stock trans (904?). car will have a 2.73 open 8 3/4 diff, to 215-60 tires. Car will be 90 % street driven with speed adv 65. 10% at WOT and town cruising. Looking for a very fun driver thats somewhere around 20mpg. NOT RACER. With a budget of $1000. what parts should I get to reach my goals? I am think one of the first should be a super six setup.
If I were building a V8 i was thinking of 1HP per CI, is that doable with the /6? thanks guys for all your help.

You're choice in gears is pretty tall. See if you can get something in a 3.2x or 2.9x
Most people prefer the 3.23 gears. At normal highway driving you'll be closer to torque peak, which will help your economy, and the car will be much more fun around town.
3.55's are a tad too far for comfortable freeway cruising on an automatic.
I run 3.50's just fine, but the noise levels are higher. They are much more fun around town though.

Are you going to stick with the 1bbl carburetor? If so, don't get too carried away with the cam choice.

Search on the 2-1/4" head pipe. Performance and economy both increase with this modification. The stock head pipe is 1-7/8" which is very restrictive.

What's your budget? $1000 isn't going to go very far for the build. Double that to get some flow work on the head.

Minimum Rings bearings and gaskets, no machine work other than perhaps taking a bit off the head and doing a valve job should be attainable with careful shopping and putting the engine together yourself for your 1k figure.

My build came in over $4K. Engine only. It's fairly close to the 1hp/cube figure. I'd say a tad less by the G-tech and strip data I've collected, based on car weight.

1HP per cube builds are going to take some rather special parts, and will generally cost much more than your target budget. It can definitely be done for less than my build, but your budget is too thin for that sort of thing.

Thanks CeeJ. the 1k budget is just for motor mods/rebuild. But maching work will come out of the 1k.
I will get more funds for other items like exhaust, manifold and now gears. I will be looking for a 2bbl set-up extra budget. I will scrap the 1 for 1 hp/ci since budget wont allow it. i just want a fun little cruiser to trol around in. Thanks again.

Any more ideal out there?

Post subject:  Simple Engine Upgrades

Sure, for the fun factor once you have done the core rebuild and maybe the 2 1/4" exhaust upgrade, I would do the distributor recurve. That made a huge difference on my engine. :D

Then the fuel line mod., carb heat deflector, electric fan, ram air/ducted air to the air cleaner, water injection to the carb,
rewire the 4 prong resistor to a 2 prong and run a .85 to 1 ohm resistor for a little hotter spark, then Dan's NGK plug upgrade, MO-3000 rotor and Blue Streak cap, 8mm plug wires, etc..... :D :D :D

My engine turned out pretty spunky and is allot of fun to drive even with the 2.76 posi.

if you plan on changing the rear end, and since you said this will mostly be a street motor, check here and you can determine how fast the engine will turn for your particular cruising speed.
