Similar to Slantvaliant's question, I am having trouble with the factory deck i put in my 84 5th ave. The unit is the factory tape deck with digital radio and built in equalizer from a 1987 5th Ave. I got it out of a junked car.

The radio worked fine at first, but now it has stopped working. The upper bar of all the digits in the display usually don't light up, but sometimes if I tap the display with my finger they do. Other times when I tap the display the get worse and more than the top line doesn't light up. The unit powers on and sends the antenna up (power antenna), but it makes no sound whatsoever. Again, when I first installed it all was well. If it makes any difference my 84 has the factory rear amp option.

Any ideas? I took electronics back in highschool and I have a multimeter and a soldering iron, and I would categorize myself as a remedial electronics person. I have very basic skills, but I wouldn't trust me to repair anything important or expensive.

Thanks!

Hey Reed
Try some contact cleaner on the connectors. The display has a connector that it rides in. Also DRY compressed air can help get the years of crud out. I usually blow them out with compressed air and then soak in contact cleaner then back to the compressed air. This can solve alot of intermitent problems.

Try 66 Cuda's trick first.

Me quoting me from another recent post:
Quote:
My 67' Dart's radio was DOA when I got the car. A few years earlier I had problems with my factory sound system in my 82' Lebaron, and I found Robert at "Precision Stereo Repair" in New Hartford, NY 315-797-5219 oldstereo @ hotmail.com in Hemmings Motor News. He fixed both units as promised to like new operation.

The 82' has a digital Am/FM radio with cassette. My problem was the little micro buttons that operate all functions failed to rebound at around year 24 as they relied on neoprene for spring action... and the drive belt for the tape deck was NFG. Robert is one of the few old car radio guys that will work on 80's & 90's digital sets. Give him a call if 66 Cuda's cleaning method doesn't work for you.

These Chrysler Digital "Quartz Lock" sets are high quality and made by Alpine.

There is always "BigMoneyLewis" on Moparts. That is Greg Ward in Huntsville Alabama. He might be able to help you.

Thanks guys. For now, I have swapped the original 84 radio back in and it is working fine. Sometime when i get some spare time I will open up the later deck and see what's up, or send it out to get fixed.

The SAMS manuals are essential for fixing these radios; I got my manuals from A.G.Tannenbaum's - they weren't expensive.
