well we can get the lambo door kit for my dart for under 300.00 from one of our vendors. so i'm thinking about getting one. any thoughts, other than the fact that most of you won't like it. is there any saftey or serrous reasons i should not install this. here is a lambo'd 63 dart http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_imag ... _large.jpg |

You must have way too much time on your hands. Or maybe adult ADD. |

They do make meds for this. But I have to admire your creative thinking! Creative gets my vote! |

I can see why you would want that, given how narrow parking spaces are getting these days, but I would be worried about being able to get out of the car past the bottom of the door, and also about being dripped on by the bottom of the door if you had been driving around in the wet muddy PNW. I am fairly certain that i would skin my knees on the bottom corner of the door trying to get in and out of a 63 Dart that had doors like that. Now, if you could do DeLorean style doors, that might be different, but you would have trouble due to the lack of a door frame extending to the roof. But hey, its your car, and you can do what you want. |

300 bux doesnt sound bad if you want them...how about a clean installation that might cost you. They look decent on a convertible, I would'nt care for them on a hard top. |

Please think carefully before you decide to do this. Side-impact resistance of pre-1968 cars is poor, and door latches are weak on pre-'67 cars and even weaker on pre-'64 cars. I strongly suspect this kit will worsen a situation of already-lousy safety performance. It will remove the door's ability to transmit crash energy to the rest of the unit body, so virtually all the force of whatever T-bones you will be headed directly for you. Not planning on getting hit? Good, glad to hear it. Neither is anyone else! So that's what's wrong with the concept. Now let's think about the implementation. You can get this kit for $300? Tell me, please, how much real engineering do you suppose went into this kit? What quality do you suppose the parts and materials are? They're not selling a lot of these, so it's not like they can amortise the design, tooling, and production costs on volume. Sorry, this strikes me as a collossally bad idea. |

it's your car.. I'm with Dan I'm not sure of your intentions about making a statement when exiting the car-- Step back for a moment--- just how many 64 yellow darts do you see? I know your area seems inundated with old mopar iron -- but I would think your car sticks out a little. \ I would think that is statement enough--- heck spend the $$ on a matching suit--- that would turn some heads Or get some flashy neon lights Lawrence |

A further note- If I had $300 budgeted specifically to alter the doors of my Dart, I know exactly what I'd do: I would have side-impact guard beams made and welded in. It's totally unsexy and completely invisible, and it's also an enormous safety improvement. One of those things it's far better to hope you never use than for your friends and family to wish you'd had. |

My biggest issue is that, unlike a lot of attention-getting modifications (like your muffler), this mod is mostly irreversible. I know that's not a concern at the moment, but it might be someday. AMHIK - I tore up a few nice cars when I was your age in an attempt to stand out, and I regret it now. As i grew older, i realized that a milder, cleanly executed car will garner more of the kind of attention you're looking for. If you want the attention of... certain people, then do lambo doors on something more "disposable", or at least easier to replace. You have a nice car that attracts a lot of attention the way it sits. If that's not enough, I'd say you're in the wrong car, and nothing you do to that little Dart will accomplish your objective. Just my $.02. Think long and hard before you do this. You may one day regret it. |

How about instead you swap in the lambo motor? That'd be more my speed- kinda like two slants in one car... |

well dan, i totally understand that there is no side impact beams in my doors, and thanks for explaining the possable saftey issues with this mod. as far as the hardware kit goes these things are solid, we lamboed & suicide doored a quad cab power stroke F350 it was awesome and it was pretty much bolt up and go. since the truck was lifted i could actually hang my 210lb self from one of the open doors. yeah i want the lambo door kit and i might order it and install it .... but whats next a digital dash ... a heads up display .... a freaking dash mounted dvd player ... NO WAY IN HELL! if i go lambo this is the last cosmetic mod i will make on the car. i like the analouge looking dash and the total retro feel of the car, that's why i own it. so that is the only thing that is stopping me from doing the lambo doors this week. but i have enough current projects on the dart for now, they are listed in order in my current slixers gallery post. thanks for the replys neil |

Well I never really liked the lambo doors, even on the Lambo itself. But it is your car, and that red Dart looks really slick. I say go for it but dont be surprised that its harder to get in and out, oh and closing the door may be tough too. Just do it anyway. Other cool door idea, how about a suicide door? A competent customizer should be able to do this. Reversed hinges can be gotten from hot rod suppliers( hagan I think) You could still add the door beam and make Dan happy too! |
