I think I read somewhere that a pressure plate can be had that will give you a slightly bigger clutch on the original Slant 6 flywheel. Something about the bolts being inset instead of on tabs.

Can anyone verify this?

The stock clutch for a late Volare is slightly bigger. They accomplished this by putting a small spacer tube between the head of the pressure plate bolts and the pressure plate itself. This makes makes the bolt narrower where the bolt heads would interfere with the disk. The heads sit up beyond the thickness of the disk. I got these spacers from NAPA as a factory replacement part for the Volare pressure plate bolt kit. It is not much narrower, but just enough to not snag and stop the disk from spinning independently.

When I first put this car together, the clutch would not disengage. I thought bolts were catching on the pressure plate, and installed the kit described. In this case, the problem was that the throw out bearing was travelling so far, it was interfering with the pressure plate release fingers, and pushing them into the clutch disk springs, thus keeping the disk spinning evenwith the clutch pedal pushed. It took several days to figure this out. All is different now with the five speed. I just thought this little piece of history might help someone out there.

As noted in the article, you can put a 10 inch clutch assembly onto the current flywheel, as long as you use the reduced head diameter hold down bolts.

10" is the max size for a truly bolt on deal. I removed a 10" set up from an '85 van to use in my '77 Aspen and can confirm it did have the reduced head (3/8") PP bolts.

Just watchout as the 'stock' 10" has been known to 'come apart' at the wrong time... if just doing daily driving it's great, try to drag race ... watch your feet...

I finally went to allen heads with my 10 inch clutches. Even the reduced hex head can cause moments of anguish in torquing. The allen head let you lay underneath, slide in the allen socket adapter and in minutes you have the pressure plate all done without a slip.

I'm probably missing something, but every clutch place I've found on the internet says a clutch for the Slant 6 has a 10 inch disk - the same for the Volare. Everything I've found here talks about a 9 inch.

Do all these 10 inch disks I'm finding mean I've located large quantities of the bigger, heavier duty clutch I'm after for the A-833.
