Its my understanding that a convertors stall is based on torque. If a slant 6 puts out 300 ftlb of torque and 235 hp and a V8 puts out 300 ftlb and 230 hp, they should stall the same right? |

It really depends upon the RPM at which the torque is developed. If your engine doesn't make 300 ft/lbs until say 3000 RPM and the torque converter stalls at 2000 RPM you are not putting 300 ft/lbs of torque to the converter at the converter's stall speed. All else being equal the larger engine should produce it's peak torque (and horsepower for that matter) at a lower RPM and generate a higher stall speed. I learned something valuable when I changed the engine in my B300 van. The engines were both 318s, but the fresh one with the 360-2bbl cam produced slightly less torque at the converter stall speed than the worn out 318 with the standard cam. So with the fresh engine the torque converter stalled at a lower RPM and it was harder to spin the tires from a stop. Freeway cruising was considerably improved however. |
