hello, I tryed to replace my rear main seal by dropping the oil pan. I've heard you can slip in a new one. When I was removing the bolts that hold the brackett for the lower half one bolt head rounded off.the way this was recessed I could reach it with anything but a sockett and I gave up and reinstalled my oil pan.Is there any way to remove this bolt? should I drill the head off the bolt so I can slip the brakett off? kenneth kenneth.d.craig@att.net |

If this happened to me, I would cut or grind away the Alm. seal cap so I could get some vice grips onto the rounded-off bolt head and unscrew it. (I have extra seal caps if you need one) Let's face it, Aluminum is softer then hardened bolt steel so I would "bail out" in that direction. DD Quote:

Going for the bolt with vicegrips is definately easier - trying to hacksaw off the head would be tuff (even trying to get a grinder into that little hole would be hard). On a side note - I just replaced my rear main, and right after the engine was put back in (actually during the reinstall) the engine starting leaking oil from the rear main. Think it's something that will go away with swelling or is it time to pull the engine back apart to see what I did wrong? Chris Quote:

Hi DD, thanks for the advice, cutting the seal cap never crossed my mind,thats the route I'll go when I try it this next time. Thanks also for the offer of the seal cap. I would like to take you up on it. Let me know what we can work out. thanks kenneth P.S. I have a 225 in a 68 truck. Quote:

This will "drill-off" the bolt's head. Always check carefully to be sure the leak is from the rear main seal and not from the rear plug to the main oil galley or rear cam bearing plug or some other area above theR.M. seal.
