Post subject: | gear shifter moves with steering wheel |
Since dropping the steering column to fix the dash console, I now find the column gear shifter on my '71 Dart (auto) moves from R to N to D when I turn the steering wheel clockwise. "Park" position seems OK. What's the secret to adjusting the linkage so everything stays where it's put when shifting into each gear? I had to add auto-steering fluid to the trans but don't see any difference in this malfunction. Thanks. BG |

You can adjust the linkage but I'm not sure that will solve your current problem. Linkage adjustments will change what gear the trans is in relative to shifter position, however neither of those should be changing with steering wheel movement. Make sure the bracket holding the column to the dash is secured (2 bolts and a stud I think, with those plastic clips in the middle). There are also 4 shorter bolts holding the bracket to the column itself. If either of these are loose the column will flop around and gear selection will change with wheel movement. To adjust the linkage - once the column/bracket is situated, follow the linkage down towards the transmission. The rods are held in place with cotter pins, but where two main ones join there is one bolt & bracket that will let you adjust their relation. With the gearshift in park, loosen the bolt. Move the rod attached to the trans as far back towards the rear end as possible, then tighten the bolt to join the two parts back together. It will make more sense once you look at it. |

I would take it back apart slowly, retracing my steps and find where the point is that it starts doing that. It sounds like a spacing problem, shims or washers out of place inside the column. Maybe a locked up bearing. But it doesn’t sound like you took the column apart? That leaves a binding problem. It could be an old problem that you somehow aggravated. People drop little screws down steering columns and distributors and 20 years later it bites you instead of him. I've been bitten twice - once in a brand new Toyota with a little screw in the steering column that locked up the steering. Danny |

It' may be the steering shaft rubbing where it exits the tube on the engine side of the firewall. There is an adjustment where the column passes through the firewall. Loosen two bolts there. Similar topics here and here |

Another thing to look at is if you have the length of the shaft wrong. I have recently had this problem. Evendently pushed or pulled to make the shaft longer or shorter, this resulted in the whole thing binding. Just something to check, Frank |

Thanks to all for your help. It turned out to be the alignment of the steering column and re-adjusting the column with the bolts both under dash and at the firewall fixed it . Great diagnosis from all you /6 Docs. |
