Post subject:  alternator charging need quick refresher course

hi sages- 80 volare ammeter needle slightly left of center at idle and 45mph. checked voltmeter on battery terminals. at idle with all accessories off shows 11.5 v, with headlights on shows 10.5 v. with engine off and no accessories on meter shows 12v at battery. battery is new. alternator at idle and no accessories on should show 13.5-14.5 i think. figuring regulator or alternator is ng. if i disconnect the alternator hotwire(with the shielded connector) and connect the positive voltmeter lead to that terminal with the engine idling the meter should read 13.5- 14.5v. if it doesnt then the alternator not the regulator is ng.. if it reads the higher (correct voltage) then the regulator is ng. is my analysis correct? thanks . bob f
