Is a pump swap an external thing? I have a spare 74 (I think) of unknown condition that I can pull a pump from. I would really like to try and get the Fart Dart back on the road.

Yes, it’s external. The oil pump is the thingamajig that you screw your oil filter onto. On an A-body, I think you have to jack the right side of the engine up to remove it.

I would service the oil pump relief valve. After that, the FSM says to tighten the mounting bolts to 200 inch pounds. There are no other instructions unless you take it apart for inspection. If you take it apart, though, it says to get a new O-ring seal for the cover... It looks pretty easy to check all the tolerances but I don’t know if I can relate it without pictures.

FSM relief valve instructions:
Inspect the oil pump relief valve plunger for scoring and for free operation in it’s bore. Small scores may be removed with 400 grit wet or dry paper providing extreme care is used not to round off the sharp edge portion of the valve.

You want to install a used oil pump of unknown condition? Yikes.

Gonna spend my time removing the old pump from the Dart. Pull it apart and inspect it.

I ordered a new one. Damn these slants have expensive pumps! Ordered a Melling for $47.99 from Advanced, they price matched Azone. NAPA wants $79!

Wasn't there something going on last year where Rock Auto was selling pumps for a couple bucks?

Pulled the filter, only a dribble came out. This is a Purolator Pure1 I poured what little was in there into a reusable coffee maker filter. NO METAL!!

Drained the pan through the coffee filter.........NO METAL!!Working on removing the bolts from the mounts.

I am wondering if I should remove the entire engine.

Previous owner has a spare dipstick in the trunk.....missing a few teeth from the old dizzy.

Back to work!! :(

Got the 4 big bolts out. Is that all that I need to pull? I had to stop for the evening.

Do you use a pry bar on it in the to get it off the motor?

Is that PITA sheet metal shield a necessisity?

74 will still have a 6 bolt pump on it. Dig down through the crap to find the other 2.

I threw the sheet metal plate away on my Duster.

You will have to pull both motor mount bolts out and jack the motor as high as you can get it to actually pull the pump out.

I’m going by pictures but I count 6 bolt holes. The gasket has 6 holes.

Hey rockauto,

I have a spare new in box pump I'd sell you for $12. I've had it forever and if you need one enough to pay $49, refuse delivery and get this one for $12 (plus shipping)

I just pulled the trigger on a rebuild gasket set. It'll be here tomorrow. Gotta get out and start pulling the motor.

This thing leaks like a sieve anyway. Might as well pull the bearings etc and check everything. If this engine is history I have another 74 that came with the 74 Duster. It has gasket goop around the pump making me think it has been replaced.

It is trying to rain around here. Gotta cut the gas line take the tranny cooler lines loose. Pull 2 bolts out of the bell housing and she is out of there.

I have some kick down linkage coming to do the super six swap while it is out. I am soaking the manifold bolts with "Krusty" penetrating oil.

I think this is a low mileage engine. It still has the original water pump on it.

I have a double roller chain on the shelf that I bought from Cox brothers back in '04. I got it for the 198 in the Duster. It showed up too late so I did a steel combo from Autozone.

I am taking suggestions on degreeing the cam. I have a friend that is going to print me a giant paper wheel. I want to go for economy with the 2:74 that is in there.

Hog out the new exhaust manifold on the ports and the exit.

Rather than try and take the head pipe loose and possibly snap off the bolts I cut the exhaust with the sawzall. I cut it where the pipe is flat so I can patch it. I will do the 2 1/4" swap at a later date $$$
