Post subject:  X or Y pipes

So, I've been looking, deaming and planning. I want a dual set up of some sort. I'm very much leaning towards Dutras, just because of the trouble I have had trying to fit a pair of 3-1s with the shift linkage. (So cal... we don't get that cold, so I'm thinking the new DDD)

So, my thoughts turn down stream. WHat are the advantages of an X pipe or Y pipe. All the reasurch I've come agross seem to say the X is better then the H pipe... but theres no real comparison between the X and Y

Here is what I have learned thus far in college about exhaust splicing options:

With an H pipe the exhaust gases are hitting a 90 degree angle, and therefore the scavenging provided by linking the two together is not as efficient as it could be.

With an X or Y you are working with more subtle angles, allowing the exhaust to flow more freely, thus allowing a more pronounced scavenging effect to occur.

Other than the added weight from having a second pipe after the two head pipes come together, I can't imagine there is a real noticeable difference between X and Y.. but I am not 100% on that, so don't quote me on it.

That's about as far as I can go.

Seems to me the data and experience suggest best results are had by avoiding this question altogether by putting in a "Wye" (Y) pipe so as to make a 6-into-2-into-1 system. If you're going for the rappy sound of duals, then you'd want no crossover at all. Keep in mind the main reason a crossover works in a V8 application is the uneven "paradiddle" timing of exhaust pulses on each bank. We don't have that with our inline sixes.

Very true. I forgot tat it was primarily for the Duals.

On a side note, Dan, I'm sending ya a PM for pricing and such for some DD's (Gotta live how that sounds)
