My slant has about 300-400 miles on it now and I need to change out the oil soon. I am not sure what the PO has in there or if he has added any sort of additive to protect the solid lifters. My question is, what brand and weight of motor oil should I run in it? Would I need a special oil with the additives already in it or can I use an additive of some kind in a normal motor oil? |

Easy answer. If the cam is stock or close to stock, just use a good brand of 10-30 oil, with no additives. |

Block has been decked .100 Head has been shaved .040, fully ported with 1.77/1.44 valves Ported valve reliefs Erson cam with 270 Duration (RV15m) I havn't looked up lift yet. Bored .030 Pistons are .040 in the hole. It is a 74 block with less than 500 miles on it since the work has been done. 2bbl Holly 350 Boss Hogg 3300 stall Torque Converter. LBP 8 1/4 rear with 3.53 gears lash set at .022 |

I am a firm believer in Mobile 1. I have a 2.7 engine in a 2000 Intrepid that is notorious for early failure. i have ran Mobile 1 in mine since new and with regular oil changes at 155K miles the motor still runs perfectly without oil any consumption. One caveat: During breakin (say for the first 1500-2000 miles) i would use regular old non synthetic. sounds like you have a nice motor good luck |

And now for a different viewpoint.... Look at the Crower web site. Go to the FAQ's and read what they have to say about sythetic oils in race engines. When Bruce Crower says something, I listen. Make sure you look at the qualifier; "In Race engines." CJ |

Since this is not a race engine and similar to mine, Mobil 1 is a fine choice. I like it's characteristics allot! I have been using 0-30W Mobil 1 in mine since break in. That has been about 50,000 now in the last two years. It starts up quick, holds good oil pressure, flows and cools well, and gets good mileage. |

I wonder if Bruce Crower knows about synthetics that have higher levels of ZDDP like the Kendal GT-1 he recommends? Mobile 1 15w-50, Mobile 1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck (just bought a gallon last week), and the Racing and V-Twin formulations all have 1200 PPM zinc or better. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/Mot ... _Guide.pdf |

That Crower deal was interesting. Seems like he might be getting a kick-back from Kendall. Every cam guys says use something different or their own blend. Just my thought. I've used Amsoil in all my autos for years. Never a problem. Also never a cam issue. How many people have really eaten cams up by running without a zinc and phos additive? Maybe they had antifreeze seapage and didn't realize? Who knows. Synthetics have been good to me. Heck I don't even change oil in my work vehicles till they have over 40,000 miles on the oil. Later. Speaking of oil change intervals. On my EFI vehicles I change the oil and filter every 5k miles. I'm switching my 4.7L Dakota to 5W-40 synthetic that I will change every 10k with a filter change and top up at 5k. |

www.bobistheoilguy.com I have been using synthetics since 1980. I will continue to do so; my engines routinely last far beyond the 200K mark, with the exception of my Mopar 2.4, which was junk from the factory and IMHO is the worst Mopar engine in history (ate a head gasket at 40K). Anyhoo, Mobil 1 will make you happy, but I prefer Royal Purple. ask 10 people what oil is the best and you will get 10 opinions. Caveat emptor. |

Not that anybody's doing it yet, but in case anyone's thinking of doing it: please do not shill for Amsoil here. If you're using it and you're happy with it, fine. No problem saying so. We welcome hearing about your experience. Think very carefully before you go beyond that, and if you're a "dealer", please keep that fact to yourself. |
