I finally got an 8 1/4" rear axle for my 65 Dart. I'm about to put all new brakes in it but was fooling-w-the axles and noticed they can be pushed in and out about .100" so is there and adjustment for this that I should be concerned about? I saw one drawing that showed there is adjusters inside the diff but didn't know if this is what they are for being that there are "C" clips of some sort as well.
Thanks for any information.
Howard

With an 8 1/4, or any C-clip rear end, you can't adjust axle end play like you can with an 8 3/4. I would pull the housing cover to make sure there isn't side play in the differential case itself. The differential case and C-clips retain the axles so if they are doing their job and the axles aren't worn on the ends there's likely nothing to fix.

Yeah-I'm gonna quit looking for trouble. Maybe the axles are not supposed to move but I opened the rear and it all looks real good-no trouble spots and if I moved the axles in/out I can see them moving but nothing else is moving. The C clips system I suppose allows them to travel a little?
Thanks-Howard

Yep.. if you shove the axles in it allows you to pull the C-Clips off and pull the axle shafts then change the defective diff parts out (I did this years back turning an 8 1/4" in a 1973 Charger into a quick-weld locker for demo derby...the 8 1/4" was easier to pull and weld up the spiders than it was to do it to a Ford 9" or Mopar 8 3/4"...).
