Finally figured out the problem with the lack of vacuum on my '64 and thought I'd send out an update so it could possibly help someone else in the future. Wound up being that someone apparently replaced the intake and exhaust manifolds with a newer model that had an EGR valve. They removed the EGR and replaced with a block off plate but didn't block off the internal hole between the I and E manifolds. Arrrrgh! Simple fix, just took forever to find the problem.

But…there is no internal hole between the intake and exhaust manifolds. There's a passage between the exhaust and the EGR valve flange, and another passage between the EGR valve flange and the intake. That's why the blockoff plate works. If there were a hole between intake and exhaust, the EGR valve wouldn't be able to do its job. The only setup that has a hole between intake and exhaust is the California-only '72-only intake manifold. That one doesn't have an EGR mounting flange, tho, so if you have an EGR flange (with valve or blockoff mounted on it) then that's not the intake you have.

I wonder if your intake might have cracks in the floor of the EGR passage.

Thanks Dan. Alot of good info there but the old mechanic I took it to said he had to plug the EGR hole between the I and E manifolds. Maybe I misunderstood.
Any pointers on the steering ??

Hoof. Guess we'll never know what the guy actually did with regard to the manifolds.
