I'm sure we all know that distinct, inimitable sound that is the Chrysler high-speed starter for most of our cars. Believe it or not, I was actually disappointed when I turned the ignition key to my 1960 Valiant wagon the first time, and didn't hear that Chrysler sound, but something very different. A lot...for lack of a better term..."older" sounding, like something from the fifties. Just was thinking about this today and realized I didn't know: when was the Chrysler high-speed starter first used? Is the starter from my 60 valiant physically interchangeable with the high-speed starter that makes that sound I love? I don't think I realized that sound came from the starter, not the engine. At least, way back when. |

You can't directly replace the direct drive starter with the gear reduction starter that makes the noise you desire. This thread should answer all of your questions and then some. http://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=69946 |

'62 was the first year for the gear-reduction starter you're thinking of. It is not directly interchangeable with the '60-'61 direct-drive starter (different drive pinion diameter and tooth count, different electrical hookup, different shim, different torque converter or flywheel ring gear). There are ways of putting a gear-reduction starter on a car originally equipped with a direct-drive starter like yours, but — speaking now as someone who did exactly that swap for exactly the reason you have in mind — it is not worth the effort, time, and expense. The direct-drive starter works well and is quite reliable. Enjoy your '60 for what it is. |
