Post subject:  How to ID a Carter BBD

There are so many carb numbers listed for the 3 barrel BBD and there is no number on mine other than casting numbers. Is there anywhere I can find out exactly which BBD I have?
Thanks

If you don't have the ID tag you are screwed.

I did some stuff researching carbs in my shop. I checked the rods with a micrometer, etc.

A '77 won't have a fitting in the rear for a EGR. '78's will.

Jets are the same size as a 318.

Correct.

Yeah, it will. First year for EGR was '73.

No, they're generally not.

OK-I'm screwed. Nothing I didn't know a long time ago. Given I have no way to find out exactlty which carb I have is there a a way to tell which base gasket out of a rebuild kit to use? I've read threads here about notches in the base etc. but also read about DIY bases so any advice is appreciated. I may have put the wrong base gasket on my rebuild-there were 3 in the kit and all I had to go by were some faint marks on the existing carb.

PPSI did you keep your old gaskets? That is where your answer is. If you determine that you do have a super6 you need to buy the 6 gasket not the 318 one. There is a difference.

Dan, the EGR thing I was refering to is the small brass tube intruding into the driver side rear.

The air horn is thicker on the super6 on the flat side.

On the jet sizes how do you measure them? I couldn't read them. I checked them with twist drills. I didn't find any that fit snug. They did feel the same in the jet.

I'll PM you my number. I am off work today. If you catch me while I can get into the shop I can get my hands onto a carb or 2 and the gaskets.

BTW if your's is apart? Spray some WD40 or pur some alchohol into the holes where the jets go. Look and see if they leak through to the bottom. One I rebuilt for myself did. I wiped a little "black berry syrup" Permatex on the bottom to fix that. The gasket might negate the need for it, I did it anyways.

Any idea how to ID the one I have with no tag? I have been told it is a slant six carb or at least not a V8 carb.
It is a tin top-w-the vent inside the bowl and the choke plate has a hole in it approx 1/4" diameter 1/3" in from the flat side of the plate. Also the metering rod or vacuum piston can be adjusted through a small hole in the tin top under the air cleaner gasket. BTW the manual here says this screw should not be adjusted but I am wondering if adjusting it would allow more fuel to be delivered??? My car seems to run very lean.
Any help is appreciated.

PPSI did you change that gasket we talked about on the phone?

I am wondering if your throttle shaft isn't loose. That will cause a lean condition.

I have not looked into the gasket issue yet. I've been too tied up trying to figure out why I can't get a good brake pedal. I will look more closely at these items asap.
Thanks
