Post subject:  finding engine number/identifying carburetor model
Hi, I'm new here and need a little help finding my engine number and identifying the carburetor model on my 77 Dodge Aspen.

I've got a Chilton's manual, but the engine number is not located on the block where Chilton's says it should be (underneath the rearmost spark plug). Instead there is a stamp a little to the front of that location that says TORQ 6/ PLUS. There's a sticker on the valve cover that says in big horizontal numerals 340 and in vertical numerals on the same sticker 4071. Then on the lower engine block on the opposite side there are these numbers 530-11 0637, and on the top of the block by the valve cover 1057 is stamped above 3598447, but none of those are like what Chilton's says the engine number is supposed to be, indicating the model year,225(displacement),model,build date, and shift in which engine was built. The vacuum routing sticker says I have a 225-2 engine, and the breather cap says Super Six, but I'd like to know the engine number.

More importantly, I've got a Carter carburetor, but I'm not sure if it's a one barrel or two. It's stamped 0-2003 under the Carter name, additionally having a small oval towards the front stamped with 6-1985. Do either of those numbers indicate the model? Other than those numbers, I couldn't find either the Chrysler number or the vendor number that the Chilton's manual says should be there. There is a sticker though that says "remanufactored carburetor", so I guess I'm not dealing with the original equiptment...

You have a Carter BBD and a "Super Six" two barrel carburetor package. Lucky you.

Hi, welcome on the board. You will want — right away, as quickly as you possibly can — to go get these three books. The Chilton book is worse than useless, for it contains a bunch of incorrect information. It's not even a little bit adequate.

Your carburetor is a Carter BBD 2-barrel unit. That's good. It's a remanufactured item; that's bad. Carburetor operation and repair manuals (and some training movies) are posted here for free download.

Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread.

Your engine requires periodic valve adjustment.

Thanks to all for your answers. I'll check that spot for the engine number in the morning.

I ordered two of the three books you recommend, Dan, and wrote to enquire about getting a factory service manual. By the way, is the color of your vehicle at the bottom of your posts aquamarine? I want to eventually get my Aspen painted that color, do you have a paint color number, or recommendations as to which paint is best to use?
