| Post subject: | 60 Valiant Steering Column |
An acquaintance has a 1960 Valiant in which a later model steering column has been installed. The column is from a column shifted automatic which, of course, would be a 65 or later though she was told it was from a '62. The question is can she easily remove that column and put in the correct column from a 60 or 61 car. I know the steering gears were different but I'm not sure about the coupler or the length of the column. Is it possible or likely that the K-member and steering gear from a 62 or later has been installed to accomodate the later steering column? The car is in Tucson so I'm not able to easily go inspect it. |

David,, I read that post--- on for a bodies only a guy has a 61 lancer wagon & 61 valiant parts car-- maybe he would help. http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/sho ... hp?t=61325 I commend you on helping, but this situation is fairly vague & without more complete info -- your shooting in the dark.. The diameter of the shaft on 60-61 cars is smaller thant 62- up cars-- so I'm not sure how they modified this to fit. It would be nice to see an underhood pic to id the steering unit being used. I agree that an underhood pic would probably clear up the issue; I'll ask her again to provide that. My thought was that the later K-member had been swapped in along with the later steering gear and linkage. I don't know if that's even possible but I've heard that it is. |
