Post subject:  I'm Cranky!! How To ID Cast From Forged?

I picked up a crank from the machine shop. It was suppossed to be a forged unit. Now I am wondering!!! They also sent me home with "my" old one that needed to be welded and reground on one of the mains. They had a crank ready to go for 1/2 the price of welding and grinding mine.

The crank they loaded up as my old one was a V-8 crank of unknown make and model!!!

I am going to call them and tell them to locate my old crank and tell them I iwll be back tomorrow.

First and last time I think I will be dealing with these guys. I am going to mic this thing before it goes in.

 frikken 25 miles one way ride

So how do we ID this thing? For my 74.

Here's a post with an early forged crank next to a cast crank. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=186629 Cast cranks have narrower journals, both rod and main, and do not have wide parting lines like forged cranks.

Thanks Joshie! Just printed that out. I am going to take it out to the shop for a comparison. Doc's has been heavily modified.

If a rod cap won't fit down onto the journal I guess that is a good indicator of a cast crank?

 geeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzz!!!!!!! Bad day in the shop. I accidently grabbed a 383 crank instead of the slant crank that was nearby. I've gotta call them in the morning and let them know I got my old crank and the new one

Stand them up on one end on the floor, then tap lightly with a hammer. Forged "rings" like a bell, Cast sounds duller. Yeah, I know... not very scientific.
