I want to replace the gears in my Volare. Its a 8 1/4 with Richmond Trac Lock. The motor is a modified slant with a 904 reverse valve body transmission and a 2600 stall convertor. Its a street/strip car and the rear tires measure 86.5 dia.I want to go through the lights at 5850 RPMs.Looks like my choices are 391 or 410.Which would get me closer tto the 5850.I now have 3.21 gears and it's good down the road but I need more gear to get it out of the hole.Does anyone sell a complete kit that includes axel bearing, seals ,pinion bearing ect.Which company makes the best gear set for the 8 1/4.I run slicks for the track and I don't want a cheap gear that won't last. :?:

What speed in the lights do you expect?

5850 assuming about 6% slippage gets you 5500 RPM actual trans ouput shaft RPM, which is 111 MPH with 3.91 gears and your tires.

Personally, if I were driving much on the street I'd just get a 3200 stall converter and leave the 3.21 gears alone. You might only sacrifice 0.1 sec in the 1/4 over 4.10s and 2600 stall, or even be the same, and you can still drive on the hwy.

I switched from 3.00 to 3.55 gears in my Project V car with a 2800 stall and it didn't pick up any time. Depends on motor buildup too.

I street drive the car but at this point i'm going for power/launch.If all else fails I'll put in a gear venders unit.I really wanted a quick change but right now it's not in the cards.Getting ready to open up a street rod/muscle car shop.So my Volare is a business card.I took it out again tonight and let it have it,runs real good for a slant but after a hard launch and hit 2nd I was going about 75 in second gear and just getting to 5600 RPMs.I reallly want to run low 12's/high 11's around 110 MPH.I want more out of the hole. Not going to do a lot of highway driving, just want to get the car in its power band.Hard to believe after 3 years it's finally fun to tear it up.The motor is pretty strong.Gonna have it chassis dyno'd in the next couple of weeks and spray it for the first time.Spent the last 2 weeks tuning it and have it pretty close.Still have to fix the seeping at the timing cover but wanted to make sure it was right in case I needed to replace the cam.Spoke with the transmision dude and that is the proper convertor for the motor build with the nitrous.Gonna get it to the strip and see if it was all worth while. The seat of the pants dyno says this thing is VERY STOUT!Looks like I'll order the 4.10 and spray it at the end.I will say that if you have a traction problem get a set of the Cal Trac leaf spings, shocks and bars.I bolted on the Hoosier slicks and it will hookup very hard out of the hole and 2nd gear. With the BFG street tires it will send them to smoke going into 2nd.I'm getting sooooo close!

Sounds good! If you're shooting for 110 MPH trap speed, then I'd go with the 3.91s, or you can get taller tires later.
