Will an automatic last longer in street conditions if you come to a complete stop every time instead of say a 5 MPH "stop"?

I know there are many other factors at work here.. I am speaking in general of course? Would there be an advantage to actually stopping or is it just urban legend?

You save more gas with a rolling stop, and I would think there would be less wear on the clutches and bands if the vehicle still had some momentum on acceleration.

It's true that your rolling stop is hard on the overunning (one-way) clutch .Remember that little "bump"when you first goosed it? When you coast to a stop, the overunning clutch is slipping (normal), and the power train slack is all on the coast side.If you hit it w/o coming to a complete stop, the drivetrain slack snaps to the drive side, and the overunning clutch goes instantly from slipping in one direction to lock in the other direction. The hardest thing on the OR clutch is spining your wheels on ice or mud and hitting dry pavement. This is why they tell you to use manual 1st and 2nd instead of drive when doing a burnout, because the OR clutch isn't used in man. 1st ,but is used in drive 1st.
