Post subject:  melted regulator and ecu

hi sages- in working on my 80 volare wagon restoration. i noticed something ive never dealt with before. both the ecu and voltage regulator appear to have been replaced before i owned the car. the originals seem to have melted out and deposited that clear gel over the fender well and firewall. it looks like sticky clear varnish. system has been running fine. i also noticed the heavy black wire which connects to the hot contact (not the fields) on the alternator(the shrouded terminal) has been clipped and new same size wire spliced in which goes over to the harness on the other side of the car. what would cause the two devices to overheat and melt out the gel and is the replaced alternator wire related? charging system runs fine, charges correctly. thanks bob f

It,s called potting compound that seals the electronic components,Very hot weather can melt it out, without other problems causing it.It would be a good idea to replace it,but my ign box has been like that for 50,000 miles-I keep a used known good one in the trunk just in case.

When I've seen the potting melt in my regulator, it had started to regulate way too high and an autopsy showed that a power resistor was burning up.

I'd replace both modules now and carry spares too.

Im with big slant fan on this. I live in Arkansas and our summers get Hot. With No battery in the vehicle Ive had 2 ecu's "melt" the potting compound out. Both still work just fine.

I checked my 65 Dart 225 slant ECU which was installed about 2 years ago when electronic ignition was added. It has less than 5000 miles since then.

The ECU (Chrysler numbers on it are 4111850 and 2791) has a gold metallic color high gloss gel surrounding the case where it contacts the inner fender

Is this the same issue being discussed?

The car is running smoothly with gas mileage in the low twenties.
