I am wondering what the typical gas mileage should be for a 225 1bbl AT. I know it has alot to do with driving habits, but it's not like I'm drag racing or anything. I only get 12 around town & 16 on the freeway. It is a 1980 Volare. It has that stupid spark control module & a non adjustable carb. Any suggestions for better mileage? It has the larger air cleaner & 2.25" exhaust. I have put Bosch Platinum plugs in . I have not checked the timing. It likes to keep running just a tad after shutoff when warm. Where should I set the timing?
I am about to be using the vehicle for a 120 mile roundtrip daily commute to work, so need all the gas mileage I can get.

Sounds a bit low, I would look ad the distributor mechanical advance / vacuum advance systems first,is it getting lot's of advance at light load cruse speeds? Next review carb jetting then onto other things like total car weight, gear ratio, tire size & inflation, wind resistance etc.

Use the search on this meaasge board an @ ss.com for many messages & things to check.

Thanks.. It also may be that I am using 235/60/14 tires . I know my speedo is 5-10 mph slow, so that would affect my mileage accumulation. As far as wind resistance, well... the 1980 Volare was not tested in a wind tunnel... The rear end gear is a 2.76. Again, I have not messed with the carb or timing. It runs & starts great, does not ping on el cheapo gas . It does run for 1 or 2 seconds after shutoff when hot.

I know I am going to be called a liar. And I hate to open this potential can of worms, but my all-time best mileage in a sl/6 car was 29 mpg. This occurred about 10 years ago on a trip up I-5, between Seattle and Bellingham, in my '66 Dart convertible(top down). I don't know even know what axle ratio I have, but the car is stone stock, with (I believe) the original 225ci engine with around 295K miles. The engine appears to have little frictional losses, because you can grasp the crank pulley and twist it with one hand. It smokes a little when cold, but seals up pretty good when it warms up. I also believe it has 215R60X14 mounted on early SBP Ralleys.
