I've gotten started on my project (EFI/supercharging) and in talking to local people about fuel rail fabrication, I've been warned of potential 'hot start' problems due to the rail being above the exhaust. The theory is that 5 or 10 min after shutting off the car, the heat rising off the exhaust below will heat the fuel remaining in the rail & injectors and boil it. If one tries to restart during this time, the injectors open but not enough fuel comes out (mostly gas vapor). Have any of you pioneers who have done the EFI conversion had any experience with this? Did you do anything to prevent it? ahtoews@shaw.ca |

On a couple of occasions when I've stopped for gas I have noticed that the car doesn't start as quickly as it does when cold. But this hasn't been a real problem. With EFI fresh (cool) fuel is being circulated thru the fuel rail soon after you begin turning the engine over, and that must take care of the problem. I've done nothing to insulate my fuel rail. Thanks Bob. I kinda thot that it shouldn't be too much of a problem. In my case, the exhaust heat will flow away quickly in the Dutra duals, there will be no turbo to add more under hood heat, there is a relatively large & open underhood cavity to allow heat to escape. The electric fuel pump certainly would remedy the fuel boil (if there actually is any). It is truly amazing how, as soon as someone has neat idea (not to mention a feasible idea, in this case), all of the experts emerge from the woodwork to tell you why it can't be done. Most of these self-appointed know-it-alls probably hadn't ever considered the idea until someone else brought it up. If people like that were doing all of the innovating, the wheel would still need to be invented! thelogs@cox.net |
