I have two questions: The first is about the speedometer gear and the second is about the plug from the right side of the trans. The car is a 65 Dart with a mid 70's a-body 904 in it (as far as I know as I didn't see the car it came out of) (1)Is there a way to make the speedometer work with this trans and (2) what should I do with the wiring that comes out of the trans that I have nothing to plug it into? Is it necessary to plug it into something or can I just drive it as is? (oops, that's three questions) Just FYI, the engine if from a later model car, too. Thanks

Had the same problem when I installed a 72 slant and transmission into my 65 GT. I used a 66/67 speedometer cable whi8ch fit the speedo and also fit the housing with the speedo gear in the transmission. Since my 65 has the back-up light switch on the shifter, I didn't need to do anything there. For the neutral safety switch to work, I used the harness that came with the donor and ran the center wire to the starter relay. I will be doing the same set-up with a 65 Dart wagon that's getting a 340/904 transplant. Hope this helps

So, the wiring operates the back-up lights and the neutral safety switch. Yes that helps, but I don't currently have a donor car to get the plug and harness off of. Also, I don't have a column with a back-up light switch in it either, so that is going to be a problem. It was a 4 speed car, that's why the column doesn't have that switch. So I need to find a 66-67 speedo cable. Cool. Thanks

The switch you have on the 904 is a 3 prong switch - center prong is for the neutral safety - outer prongs is for the back-up lights. Since you had a 4 speed, those wires went from the trans to the bulkhead connector then to the connector for the rear light harness then to the B/U lights. Original 65s with an automatic used a single prong switch for the neutral safety switch with the back up light switch either on the floor shifter or at the base of the steering column prior to going into the firewall. I'll have to check but think I might have most of a later 3 wire harness to get you started. I'll get back to you on that or maybe someone else has one laying around to help you out.

That would be cool. Thanks for the info and the possible connector.
