Post subject:  Tough starting engine with '63 Dart

I have a '63 Dart with a 225 /6. I super-sixed it with a two-barrel Weber carb with an electric choke. Also put in Pertronix electronic ignition.

The problem is: It doesn't like to start cold, and it has to be revved to keep the idle going until it warms up. It'll usually die if you put it in gear before then.

BUT, after it warms up, it runs fine -- the idle is even too fast sometimes.

There aren't any exhaust leaks, and I just replaced the vacuum advance. The choke *seems* to be set right, but different settings haven't helped much. The PCV valve is new, and I clean it and the other breathers and air filter regularly.

Any ideas?

Almost certainly a problem with the choke or with the carburetor. What is the history of this particular carburetor? New, used (off of what)? "Idle too fast sometimes" suggests all is not well with this carb.

Thanks.

The carb is only a couple years old. It's a Weber 2 bbl that seems to be in good shape. Like I said, I try to keep everything clean, but maybe the jets are wrong for the engine(?). Not sure how I can determine that. I know that sometimes if I floor it, there's a chug-chug-chug before things catch up and go.

I recently had a good mechanic set up the timing and idle, and he was pretty knowledgeable about the electric choke (mainly that they never really work right, but I was pretty close). It's set to open fairly early.

I'm just wondering why it totally gags at morning starts, hesitates if it's been sitting more than an hour, but starts fine if it's only been sitting 10 or 15 minutes.
