Hello,

Just bought a 1980 Dodge Ram D150 on Saturday from an old man. No owners manual so I don't know much about it. I believe it has a 225 slant six engine and it has a 3 speed with overdrive transmission.

Here is my issue- the old man i bought it from didnt drive it much in the past 15 years. The truck has 116,000 miles and it is kinda tricky to tell if you are in reverse, 1st or 3rd gear... I'm used to driving a manual transmission but this one seems a little weird to me. Any idea on what transmission a 1980 dodge has? Should I get the gear shifter checked out or rebuilt/replaced? Or is it maybe time for a tranny rebuild??? Any help would be great! Thanks!

Welcome on the board. Sounds like the problem is probably in the shifter and/or linkage, not in the A833OD transmission itself. Inspect the linkage end to end; find and fix any slop, missing washers, missing clips, missing retainers, etc. You may also need to rebuild the shifter.
