Post subject: | 198 parts question |
Finally cleaning out the garage and have disassembled the 198 in the back that has been laying about for years. I have kept the rods, pistons, crank and the crankshaft caps. I can press the pistons off and dispose of them correct ? I believe they are nothing special? Also do I need to keep the crankshaft main caps or are they the same as the 225 block? Thanks in advance guys. Dave |

If they are scuffed I would not re-use them. Why dispose?- I see a piston wind chime in your future grasshoppa... |

Excepting the low compression truck piston all the pistons are the same, in other words there are no special pistons for the 198. The main caps should stay with the block if the block is good. The caps are machined along with the block and cannot be interchanged without machine work. |

OK gotcha. So I may pitch the pistons. Since the block is gone, there is no point in keeping the main caps then? I don't need these to go along with the 198 crankshaft do I? Thanks for being patient. |

No reason to keep the main caps unless you have a bunch of money into another block that needs a cap and one of yours is a close match. |

So a 225's main caps are dimensionally interchangeable with a 198's main caps? It seems it is more important to keep the main caps with the original block then with the original crankshaft ? |

Yes, you want to keep the caps with the block. If you have the rear aluminum cap, save that. It can come in handy when rebuilding an engine. What happened to the 198 block? It's the same as the 225 block. The 198 crank can be used for a low deck 170 stroker build, so you might find a use or a buyer for that part. If somebody needs one for a core it can be useful as well. The 198 rods are in demand for performance builds. If they're in good shape, they can command a premium. CJ |

You mean the low-compression export piston, right? Trucks got same pistons as cars.

By truck I meant truck, not a little pickup. |

OK cool. I got rid of the 198 block as I didn't need one more engine laying around. So, kept the main caps, the crank, the rods and attatched pistons. Now I will get rid of the steel caps and keep the aluminum one, the crank and the rods. I'm gonna press the pistons and pins off the rods so the rods will be easier to store. As you maybe able to tell I am cleaning the garage and really trying to consolidate down. Thanks you all. |

Be careful pressing the pins, you can easily ruin the rods. ![]() |

OK, What is the best way to press the pins out w/ no damage to the rods? Do I need to support the piston under it as I press the pins out? I sure don't wanna do any damage to the rods.... |

My point of clarification still stands. I have never seen any documentation that bigger-than-pickup trucks (or any other vehicles) got low-compression slant-6s in first-world markets — have you? There's plenty of documentation that low-compression pistons were installed in engines for export to markets with low-octane gasoline.

What is the 198 rod combo for a performance engine? Are they longer or shorter rods? |

The 198 rod is roughly 0.3" longer than the 225 rod. 7.0-ish" as opposed to 6.7" rods. With the advent of the K1 rods, finding a set of 198 rods becomes less of an issue. The 198 rods are getting hard to find. Go into the articles section and read the stroking the slant six article. CJ |
