Ok,

1984 Truck with lean burn. Trying to get it running decent for the race at Mason Dixon next weekend. We dumped the Carb and intake and installed a 4 barrel and Offy intake. Yes I know it is too big but it will get upgrades in the future to help with that. Ryan got a new MSD 5 and hooked it up temporarily with the existing lean burn distributor just to make sure it would start. It only has 3 wires to hook up and it started fine.
Next we pulled out the distributor and installed what I thought was a good distributor, mounted the MSD, hooked up all the wires and it will not start. It has no fire. Scratching head now. Only thing I changed was the distributor.
So reinstall original distributor and still no fire. Scratch head. The one thing I did do was put a new plug on the end of the distributor. (It was very hard and brittle). I looked a little closer at the plug coming out of the wiring harness for the distributor and notice that the way the plug plugs into my new plug has the wires switched. ( Black wire not going to black wire...etc) So we corrected that and tried again. Still no fire.

#1 Did I burn something up with the pick up wires being reversed?

#2 How can I tell if the distributor is good or not?

#3 Am I missing something else?

Thanks for your help. As I said before electrical issues are not my thing.

I know to check the distributor your supposed to check the amount of resistance on the wires coming out of it. also, you should also take the dizzy out and spin the shaft around and see if it is picking up the signal. If you have resistance and it has output when your spinning it its probably okay. Not sure on the resistance or how much output you should have though. cant remember. Maybe someone one here could chime in.

Well Thanks for the info, but it appears that the MSD 5 will not work. It did not have any connections for the distributor pick up so Ryan is getting a MSD 6AL and hopefully we will be set. It will match the one in the his Dart and we hooked that up and it worked fine.
