Hi all,

The 30-ish year old AM/FM radio antenna on my car is in bad shape. The car is a 1965 Barracuda, with the fender mount antenna. I would like to have one of the modern, one piece whip styles, but I don't know who carries those anymore.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Greg

Is your radio AM, or AM-FM?

If it is AM, a telescoping mast would be best as long as it fits into the hole in the fender. I know from experience that the 67's had a slightly larger hole than standard, translation: way too expensive.

Telescoping mast type is what came with your car from the factory. When retracted it can be zero inches to about 14 inches tall depending on the stile, and extended it is perhaps about 38 inches. For a reason too nerdy to expound on, the longer telescoping aerial works better for an AM set.

If you have a AM-FM set, get the shorter one length mast of 31 inches, it works better for FM, a band most folks listen to these days.

Most auto parts stores, and auto stereo shops will have replacement antennas that may or may not have a stock look, but will retro fit nicely.

Make sure that the cable from the antenna to the radio is long enough to fit your application, measure the old unit before going to the store, and save a trip. If the replacement is too short, there is an extender cable that you can purchase to make up the correct length.

These units run about 9 to 15 bucks for non motorized units if you have a standard fender hole size.

Antenna X on Ebag has replacements for 25 shipped. I have used there antennas and they work well and look OE.
