How would I go about doing a self- oil change
on my 1973 dodge dart swinger?
-225 V6 Engine
-Short style full-flow oil filter[/b]

(1) get a set of box end wrenches. Oil drain plugs come in different sizes.

(2) get something to catch the oil in as it drains. There a cheap okastic receptacles made just for this purpose available at most autopart stores and even most grocery stores.

(3) go to Napa and get a new Napa Gold oil filter and six quarts of 5W-30 oil.

(4) get an oil filter wrech that will fit your oil filter.

(5) If you can get under the car enough to reach the plug on the drain pan, do so. Otherwise, using a jack, block of wood, or some method of driving the car onto something so there is more space underneath it, raise the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.

(6) place the oil receptacle under the drain plug.

(7) remove the drain plug and let the oil drain.

(8 ) once the oil has drained, replace the drain plug. Tighten it until it is snug, but don't strip the threads on the oil pan.

(9) move the receptacle under the oil filter.

(10) using the oil filter wrech, loosen the oil filter.

(11) remove the oil filter taking care that the oil that spills out goes into the receoptacle. once the filter is off, place it with the openening down into the receptacle so it can drain.

(12) open one of the bottles of oil. Dip your finger in and put a thin coat of new oil on the rubber gasket on your new oil filter. Put the new oil filter on the pump. Spin it down until the filt makes contact with the pump body, then turn it 1/2 turn beyond that.

(13) put two quarts of oil in the motor. Check for leacks at the drain plug. If it leaks, quickly put the receptacle under the leak and tighten the plug until it stops leaking.

(14) put anoth quart of oil in the motor and start it up. Let it run for about 30 seconds and watch for a leak at the oil filter area. If it leaks, tighten the oil filter. If it doesn't leak, stop the motor and add another two quarts of oil.

(15) let the motor sit for about 30seconds, then check the oil level. Add oil as needed.

Reed's instructions are generally good, though the exact weight of oil you should use is determined by how many miles and how much wear are on your engine. 5W30 is a good choice for a nice "tight" engine that doesn't burn any oil. 10W30 for an engine with moderate wear, or 15W40 for an engine with more advanced wear. Do not use 10W40, and only use 20W50 on an engine that's really whipped.

The best filter is a NAPA Gold #1806. Second preference is NAPA Gold #1515.

It sounds as if you're brand new to do-it-yourself auto repair. The biggest favour you can do yourself is to go buy these three books as quickly as you can and start reading.
