not trying to jack your thread, but I just had a quick question about the heat riser. Is the heat riser actually needed? What does it do? My heat riser on my truck is on there but it was connected to the air cleaner. I since have remove that and installed an edelbrock air cleaner.

The heat stove, flex pipe, and thermostatic air cleaner are worth keeping for best economy and driveability, but they are not part of the manifold heat control valve. Yes, you should keep the heat control valve working correctly; see here.

If you got headers, you wouldn't even have the heat riser. The heat riser is inside the exhaust manifold. The heat stove is the sheet metal box bolted to the bottom of the exhaust manifold and can be made to work with headers (not saying it's going to look real pretty or work as well, but it's been done).
