I am having a really hard time getting my front drums off. Can I measure the outside diameter to somehow tell if they are 9 or 10 inch? Typically, did they put the same diameter front and rear or 10" front and 9" rear? Thanks |

Yes, all factory drum brake systems on A-bodies used the same size front and rear, either 9" or 10". Look at the perimeter of the drum and you'll find a max allowable diameter. It'll be something like 9.060" or 10.060". That'll tell you. Why such a hard time removing the drums? Have you removed the central nut that holds the hub to the spindle? |

I thought that you just had to heat the drum and did not know that the nut had to be removed Thus, I ended up breaking the drum So, now I am looking for a replacement drum. I thought that the drums were different sizes front and back Because it in 9" I am going to have a really hard time finding one. |

Whoah, stop! You never, ever heat brake drums. Please, for your sake and that of everyone you share the road with, stop working on your brakes until you know more about how to do so safely and effectively. This is not the right part of your car to experiment on; the consequences of getting it wrong are much too grave. Go — now — and buy the three books described and linked in this thread. (Yes, the drums are different width and configuration front/back, but if you have 9" front and 10" rear or other way round, somebody swapped parts at some point. And no, you won't have any trouble finding drums...remember the part numbers and links I gave you in your other thread?) |
