I have the stock 24:1 manual box in my dart. I dont want power steering at all.

Has anyone here run the firm feel 20:1 box? How did you like it and how much do they charge(no price online,dont want to call since I cant buy right now)?

Has anyone run the 16:1 manual box on the street? What do you think of it?

The car is a daily driver(rain or shine) and will see the dragsrtip/road coarse often when the suspension/steering get done.I know 16:1 will be a bear at low speeds,but it might be worth it at high speed?

Most guys will give the 20:1 a thumbs up, I think 24:1 is a bit better at low speeds if you have one of the late "heavy" cars. Keep looking for the 20:1 gears, there aren't many left, and Firm Feel no longer will build your 24:1 to a 20:1 as their stock of 20:1 parts is running low.

I thought I was hot ѕhit for scoring one of these boxes about a decade ago. Installed it in my '65 Canadian Valiant (=Dart) with aluminum engine…it sucked almost every last drop of enjoyability out of driving that car. Made it a complete damnuisance to drive in town. Parking was all but impossible. Zero counterbalancing benefit in any conditions, including on the highway. I consider the 16:1 manual box maybe useful for autocrossing, useless for everything else.

Thanks for the replies! :D

Since I dont autocross THAT often,I think staying away from the 16:1 box would be good.Especially since you said it was in a 65 dart with the aluminum block,would would be roughly 2-300 lbs lighter than my Dart. Its a 67 Dart 2 door so it aint no pig,but definitly heavier than an aluminum block early a!

I usually have run stock manual or power steering in my Mopars,so thanks for the lesson.

What cars did the 20:1 box come in from the factory? Is there any place I can still buy the 20:1 wormgear/seals?

I had the 16:1 box in my '64 Dart V8 and didn't find it terrible... of course I was about 24 at the time. Anyway, it makes for heavy steering around town but really nice steering on the freeway.

Nowadays, I would (and will) go for a firm feel rebuilt power steering box because you get the 3.5 turns lock-to-lock of the factory qr manual box but the lighter feel of a power box without the ultra-light factory ps.

I even ran a small-diameter steering wheel, and it did not seem too bad to me. On my other '64 Dart I had power steering with a small wheel and that was just too light. Factory PS is a waste of time IMHO.... go for the 16:1 and tough it out, I say. Or get a firm feel PS box...

I have the 16:1 in my 340 car, and I like it. I'm a large American (260 lbs, 18 stone, 8 ), and a construction worker, so others might not agree. I'd trade a good, stock box for a 16:1 + some $$ if anyone wants to get rid of theirs.

What is the stock ratio in a '72 non power steer Charger? Is it also 24:1?

Yes, all the '62 and later stock manual boxes are 24:1 except the seldom-seen '65-'68 optional quick-ratio unit, which is 16:1.
