Post subject:  '64 A904: Late upshift

I'm a little worried about the (reportedly recently rebuilt) trans in my new '64 Dart. It shifts really late (impossible to hit 3rd gear below 35 mph) even under closed throttle and even with the (stock, correct) kickdown linkage adjusted all the way short. I can't remember what else causes late upshift on the dual-pump Torqueflites. Previous owner mentioned a shift kit having been installed (uh-oh; tricky to do this right on the pre-'66 transmissions) and the rear axle is now a 2.76 rather than the factory 2.93 ratio. Charrlie? Anyone?

With a shift kit installed, they may have cranked up the line pressure too high. Might also be a stuck governor.

Thanks, Charrlie. Any easy way to discern one problem from the other? And without knowing what sort of a "shift kit" might've been installed, how likely is it that dialling down the line pressure will cause other shifting problems?

Run some pressure checks... (see the FSM)
All the test ports are accessable from the outside.
The only trick is to find a pressure gauge that goes up to at least 250 psi
