Post subject:  hydro cam mech head ???!!!

Hi all,
Its been awhile for me, been busy in the Navy, took 9 days leave to come home and see the family fix the car and bring her back up to pensacola,fl. ran into a problem with the rebuild though. I need to track down a new cam kit, ersons out of cam blanks, not really to excited to pay 2X for a chevy lobe comp cam, so heres the question,

the engine is a '76, can I use a boneyard hydraulic cam and lifter set up on the mechanical head/block with out changing the cam bearings ??

I read an old hot rod article the said you can use a hydraulic cam with mechanical lifters to give you a broader torque curve, but thats for V-8's, would that work for the slant ?

Thanks all,
-Mike

Oof! Any indication when they'll be back in stock?

Well…yeah, you could if you were to machine a groove in the rearmost cam journal (and also use the hydraulic-engine pushrods and complete rocker shaft assembly with bolts), but…why? The factory hydraulic cam is weak.

This sounds like a poor idea.

1-2 weeks

because the only slants I have found were an '82 & '85 D-150's

This sounds like a poor idea.

well I said it was v-8's :D

Narrower lobe separation than 110° is better for a 225.

Erson's advertised durations are a bit longer than other mechanical cams with similar .050" tappet rise duration numbers.

Having said that, Oregon Cam Grinding #346 is a mechanical with 234/228° at .050", .476/.479" lift with 1.5:1 rockers and is only 262/252° advertised duration which is checked at .020" lift. The lash is listed as .012/.012 so the effective duration is a likely a little more than advertised. It's ground on 106° lobe centers and 102° intake centerline which is near ideal for a 225. You can ask for a different centerline if/when you order.

Oregon Cam Grinding typically regrinds OE cams and charges $70 plus a $15 core charge., You'd have shipping on top of that. They did have some new slant blanks last time I asked. I have run a few of their cams and have always been happy.

If your OLD cam is in good shape Erson will regrind it to the 280/270. I was told we will get that at the slant 6 "discount" too.
Just a thought,

well just got off the phone with oregon, said they could have the cam ground in 1 day and sent out just as quick WOOO HOOOO !!! forgot about the time difference from florida-oregon, gotta call back in 1 hourand place my order.

Now joshie why do you reccommend a tight LSA ? This will be a NA engine, but will be getting turbocharged in the very near future, and erson reccommended the 280/270 110deg for turbocharged app's

The tight LSA is due to the large cylinders and small valves requiring more overlap to scavenge the cylinders. If you are not going to change the cam between now and when you turbo the car I would use a 110-112° LSA and live with the loss of mid range torque until the turbo is installed.

Josh,

Did you design that #346 cam for Oregon? I was going to get one ground to exactly those specs myself - nice work. I will probably order one for the motor I just dropped into Slantkota.

Cheers,

Lou

Lou,

Nope, Oregon had that grind already. Serendipity I suppose.

Mike,

I have a set 340 springs and retainers available if you want them. I won't be putting them to use like I thought. PM me if you're interested.
