While moving some of my engine parts around (getting ready to assemble my Slant :) ), I picked up my old MDT starter and pulled the bendix(?) that engages the converter out to the starting position. The problem is, it didn't retract back into the starter.

Is this typical?

I wondered if it would retract when I put power to the starter.

Any thoughts?

Thanks All

It is a Bendix Folo-Thru drive. Once it is moved to the engaged position, it locks there until it reaches a certain rotative speed, at which point a pair of flyweights fly outward and release the latch, and it retracts. It's fine, it'll just be slightly harder to install the starter.
