Post subject: | newer factory Mopar radio question |
I recently wired in the black and gray plugs on both my '83 D 250 and my '78 Fury so I could put in newer Mopar factory radios; to gain a clock in both, and in the case of the Fury, to add FM radio to my choices; AM is kinda boring unless its football season and I can catch The Bears games. I got matching AM FM cassette with 5 band EQs from a couple late 90s minivans; one I bought from a member of another site I frequent the other I picked up at a local junkyard. The junkyard one wound up being junk (I pulled the one out of the truck and swapped radios at 2AM this morning; one radio worked in both vehicles the other in neither; So I returned the recent junkyard-bought one today for an exchange; in the process I gained a CD player, too; this radio has both a CD, and a tape deck; (honestly probably won't use either much; though I have plenty of CDs and tapes I could use) Slight problem; the CD player don't work, but the tape does; I tried about 10 CDs and same result; it takes the CD in and after about 30 sec the display reads "err" and spits the disc out. What's the chance it just needs cleaned? (I dont wanna return it-again- just for that; but if it's a "bigger issue" then yeah; though I admit to not using CD players very often, being I have one it may as well work I guess.) so anyone gave a guess as to what may be wrong with the CD portion? Side note (unrelated to radio question, just a comment) I had bought a nice set of Kenwood 6X9 "4 way" speakers last fall, for use in the Fury; went to install them and see that they would not work, especially the driver side; due to how the package shelf is stamped; I wanted to surface mount them and not cut holes in the metal or the "masonite"/Formica /paneling board (whatever the rear deck is made of) as it has the factory "slits" in it already; I'm not interested in cutting this car up; so I wound up going out and getting a set of 5X7s. I remember puttin 6X9s in my old "late B" Cordobas 20 years ago, but back then, I didnt care about cutting the cars and making the speakers fit. I was out in the garage til pst 2AM this morning wiring in the "new" stereo and speakers and R&R'ing the back seat to gain access. I have not put any up front yet, (again dont wanna cut anything to do so) but 2 speakers with AM AND FM is a big improvement over 1 speaker and AM-only, as it is! |

Are the CD's you're trying ones that you've burned yourself? or store bought CD's ? Older CD players don't always play self-made CD's............. |

nope; all store bought (some garage sale bought but none are "home made" I hope this thing ain't "partial" to the kind of music it'll play and just being tempremental; I tried about 10 CDs in it; guess I'll have to dig out the cassettes, for my road trip, then. I don't wanna try a country one cuz I dont have any; I hate "country" ![]() ![]() But I do have some Rush, that I was hoping to bring along! (that one plays fine in the nearly 10 year old Pioneer CD in the Wrangler so I know it's good) Wonder; did I ever get those Deep Purple tapes back to my neighbor Beats fumbling for a station on the road! though the 1st 3 stops, I oughtta be still able to get my favorite local Chicago station. (they have a WI affiliate that plays the exact same program only 1 click down the dial) |

I've run that CD/Cassette/FM/AM deck in a few cars over the last decade-plus. It's a decent unit. Some of them will and some of them won't play home-burned discs. Do try cleaning it thoroughly to clear the "ERR" message. |

I've also used those radios in older cars and they are good. The one in my truck won't play self-burned CDs, but the sound quality is great. After I bought the last one for my Valiant from e-bay, I was talking to the parts manager in the local Dodge dealer and he said he had several on the shelf that had been pulled from new cars because the buyer wanted an aftermarket unit. I regretted not trying him first, as he would sell the ones without CD players for $100, and those with players for $125. At the time, used ones were going for a similar price at auction. BTW, there is a way to modify the radios so they will play home-burned CDs. I had a link to the article, but lost it when my hard drive crashed. |

as a side note to the part youve already figured out, i had some pioneer 6x9s i had in hs that i just took out of my stratus, used to have them in boxes in the back window of the dart, pulled the back seat and everything, was going to put them in the hole like you planned, and also, they were slightly too big to fit in the stock place, and they wouldve stuck up above the back particle board and rattled unless i cut the back panel, which i didnt want to do. i went to the local hardware store and bought 8 skinny bolts, nuts, and washers, put them down through the stock speaker screw holes and mounted the speakers from underneath. so they wont rattle the back panel and i didnt need to cut anything, sounds very good and looks stock. had an extra sub i got from todd on here(alpine type e 10") and an extra box and small amp. i drove it from illinois to indy with just my laptop lol...much better now! |

Yeah andy; I mounted teh 5X7s from underneath as well; Looks like the pass side was set up to go wither way (5X7 OR 6X9) but driver side; no way; the "shinny" screws came with the speakers but 91) getting 6X9 worth of sound thru a 5X7 hole would not have worked well (especially since the larger speakers are "4 way" and the inner cones about fill up the 5X7 hole themselves and protrude so far above the plane of the main cone; the pass side rear deck has a larger "step-down" stamped into it than the driver side; a single rear speaker must have been a factory option; and on this car the back window would need to come out to make room to get in there and cut the rear deck metal; the larger speakers also drop down farther, not clearing the spare tire. |

gotcha, mine are stepped down too, but the holes are perfectly lined up with the outer ring of the speakers (the part that goes up and down, my mind is blanking on the technical term) and both are the same size, its probably not ideal for sound, but its better then just a laptop, and harder to steal then 6x9 boxes, and looks better. i have enough room under mine, cutting it would be a pain and something i dont want to do, but it could be done i suppose. now that i think about it, i bought 6.5" infinity component speakers for my stratus from crutchfield and they included the adapters for the 6x9 hole, a similar thing could be done back there i suppose, but it might not clear the back deck panel, ah well, it works for now. i just wanted some decent sound, getting it to quit leaking (fluid out and rain in) is top priority i think...now i need to figure out the front audio, i had some extra tan panels i cut up but they dont match and i gave away those speakers |
