Post subject:  it never ends. ever. how to best fix rusty fuel filler neck?

i pulled the tank tonight in prep for the new one and discovered the bottom couple inches of my fuel filler tube are rusty. i figure i can use steel wool, sandpaper, wire wheel, etc etc to get the rust off, but i dont want to put that roughed up previously rusty thing back in my new tank with my new lines. i didnt see one on rock auto where ive recently order a good amount of stuff. how can i make sure this rust is gone for good, when i was thinking about keeping the tank emsvitil said i could use muratic acid to clean the tank, could i do the same on the filler neck? then could i use paint or tank sealer to keep it from happening again (or will it peel when rust comes underneath and cause more problems?) i wont be letting it sit with gas without putting in stabil or something, but i want to be done with rust in the tank, thats why im trying to do this right! thanks guys

also i guess that a few inches of rust on the bottom counts as "EXC SHAPE"

also part of the 'never ends' title, i was walking around the dart and noticed what appeared to be about 4 inches of trim missing near the front pass side on the door frame, looked closer and apparently it slipped down while i had the door open and i shut it on it :x bent my trim (dad just got rid of our parts dart and our extra trim was in there, might have had an extra) and scratched paint off the door. always something, i think i might need to amend my list of things to do in the dart to take into account twice the time to fix stuff i discover or break as i got along...

then could i use paint or tank sealer
Don't use paint, it will dissolve and plug stuff up. Tank sealer if you have some. Perhaps POR-15; I think it is not effected by fuel, check the label.

Whatever you do use, make sure it is smoothly applied as the rubber bushing the filler pipe passes through at the tank will bust your chops under the best of conditions. Plan on a new filler pipe bushing, and a new filler pipe to quarter panel gasket so you don't have to do the job twice when it starts to leak.

thanks, i dont have any but i might get some, i already did an online request fot that gasket, should hear back this am, most the rust is actually on the internal ramp thing that doesnt come in contact with the gasket so i should be ok.
