Are all A833's non syncro when going down into first, or does that mean mine should be and the syncro into first is blown. I can get back to first, if barely rolling, like 6 MPH, above that there is a bit of grinding. All up shifts are good. If this is a non syncro unit, can it be rebuilt to allow down shifts to first, I like that for wheeling in traffic. Tranny is in a 83 D-150. thanks |

A833s are fully synchronized in all forward gears. Downshifting is a tough job for the syncros as you have to speed up the clutch disc and input shaft when downshifting. This job is usually made tougher by people putting GL-5 in the box which is too slippery for the syncros to get a good grip. I would make sure you have the correct lube in the box and make sure there is no drag on the clutch. Redline MT-90 isn't cheap, but it worked great in my A833. |

joshie is correct i had the same problem with my 87 1/2 ton not wanting to downshift into first gear especially when it was cold. i changed the tranny fluid to redline mtl and it really helped. now i can safely downshift without any grinding at around 12-15mph. dean |
