Well I had the Valiant parked in the yard for a month or so and it apparently got rained on with tiny little sticky husks that are now baked hard. I washed the car today but barely made a dent in the glazed carnage. I'm thinking I will have to wait for a warm day and maybe try some bug and tar remover. Anyone else ever play the sap game? |

If your clear coat is up to it and it were my car, I would try using some wd-40 and cheese cloth in a small test area to see if that gets it without damage. I have used wd-40 with cheese cloth (and at times a heat gun) to remove professional painted on as well as plastic letter advertisement type items from vehicle doors and bed sides with fairly new paint and it helped a lot. I have not tried that on sap though nor on old paint so be very careful...Best of luck. |

I just cured the same problem on my D-100 after months under a tree with a regular household spray cleaner, by chlorox I think???, your wax will also be gone. It took everything off down to the paint, but didn't hurt the paint. |

cottonwood stickies....they are a plague here. I tarp everything from April 21 till May 21. I wash the car with dish soap in the rain........ The purple things that drop last(pollen) will stain paint (specially white). I have no cure for those. |

W-D 40 is 54 cents per ounce. Turtle Wax bug and tar remover is 31 cents per ounce. Kerosene is about 3 cents per ounce. Some things are good for small spots but not an entire hood. If you have nice paint I wouldn’t try to rub it off with anything. There could be (probably is) a lot of dirt and dust suspended in the tree sap so I don’t think it will work without damage. You’ll have to find something that dissolves the sap but doesn’t dissolve the paint. Let it soak a while, then rinse and repeat. If you rub it with anything use a soft car washing brush with soap and water but I’d be careful with even that until all of the sap is gone. What you use will depend on your paint type and age. I have used rubbing alcohol, which should not damage paint, but test first. Doesn't take it RIGHT off, but you can soak a paper towel and let it sit on the sap for a little and soften the sap, then rub off. Lou |

What not to use, nail polish remover, may sound obvious but... A friend of mine had some sap or other sticky crud on his brand new Buick Grand National, his mom see's it and thinks I'll just clean that off for my son, whips out the acetone (nail polish remover) and you can guess what happened. She got the goo off, and took the car to the paint shop for a touch up. oops. I also use WD 40 to remove sticker residue from trucks and havent had a problem with it, it may work on sap I would try it but you have to clean off the wd 40 after with good soap and water, then re wax it. |

Good point on the wash and wax, I forgot to mention that.

Thanks for all the good advice, I'll try a few ideas in an inconspicuous area. The paint is probably five years old and is only a single stage. |
