Post subject:  Probably dumb header mounting question.

I just snagged a 66 dart wagon, with a 70's 225 1 bbl, that came with a cast 2 bbl intake (no carb) and all the linkage, and a set of what look to be clifford long tube headers. My dumb question is- looking at the mounting flange on the headers, and the factory intakes- it appears to be a big difference in the THICKNESS of the flanges- the header flange is much thinner. How do you compensate for this when mounting it with a factory intake, since the bolts and triangular washers seem to tighten both the intake and headers? Does that make sense? Thanks for any help- this is my first slant 6 project, so....

If the flange is a different thickness those are probably Hooker headers. Clifford's normally have a 1/2" thick flange that matches the intake.

You can tack weld 1/4" nuts on the spots where the triangles touch. That's what MP did on their headers. :D

if the flanges are thinner it`s most likely hooker headers, i welded washers to the headers to make up the difference.

You will want to check and see if the headers will fit the car. Unless they are really old NOS headers, they most likely will not fit the 66 chassis. I don't think anyone has made long tube headers to fit the 66 and older "A" bodies, for more then about 15 years.

Thanks guys- that's kind of what I was thinking was going to have to be done. They are older headers. The guy I bought the car of of said he found them on a 65 Dart in the junk yard, so they should be earlier narrow frame a body?

Be careful... used headers are a total "crap-shoot" when it comes to fitting.
(SL6 headers in general are not known for the best fit... especially the long tube styles)
