Post subject:  Budgeting for a new carb
I believe the BBD has reached the end of it's useful life and I'm looking for a new carb. Throttle shaft play, loose idle mixture screws and choke problems in case anyone was wondering.


Based on the common problems with rebuilt/referbed carbs, What should I do?
I don't normally ask such open ended questions or for definitive answers because I like to make my own way and use these sites as sort of a "cheat sheet" if I get stuck ( I don't usually have much to add that hasn't been covered in depth ) but this whole thing of fiddling with the BBD to get it to stay running right is killing me.
I can't afford to buy a bunch of junk to "try out" and not so sure I can afford new but if that's what will make my life easier I'll sell a kidney or something

From what I've gathered, my options are ( I think in order ) :
1. New 32/36 DFEV - new linkage, learning curve and price.
2. Reman? from where?
3. NOS BBD/2280 ? Dan? how much?? :)
4. Scrap yard junk?? not likely as ALL of the 2bbl carbs are picked clean and who knows what you will get if I do find one.
5. Send out my old BBD to have it rebuilt - Where to send it?

This will be going on my daily driver. 73 /6 Duster, 833OD, HEI.

Welp, I decided to open up the BBD just to satiate my curiosity as to what was causing the increase in idle problems. Turns out that there is a TON of very fine rust sitting under the floats, so much that I could see where the float was sitting on it. Oh yeah and the veturi screws were loose. How the crap would those things get loose??

So I'm holding off on the new carb just yet and will see how long this rebuild will hold up. I know I have some issues with this whole thing but that brings me to another question. How often should one have to rebuild a carb?

You don’t have to rebuild them that often - every 5-6 or 10 years. The rust comes from somewhere else. It sounds like you have more of a gas tank, line, and/or filter problem. Unless maybe the carburetor was full of this stuff when you got it.

Carb cleanout and rebuild is not scheduled maintenance. You do it when it needs done. How often that is depends on a lot of factors including the quality and purity of the gasoline you run, the efficacy of the fuel filter you run, the quality of the carburetor kit you buy, whether the carb castings still have their anticorrosion surface treatment. You might have to do it every year. You might not have to do it for a decade. Neither extreme is too likely, but either is possible.
