My grandpa has informed me that one of his friends just bought a dodge truck that has a slant 6 with a 4 speed in it, and he can't remember if he said the truck was a 76 or an 86. He wants $100 bucks for the motor, I dont know if this includes the trans or not (assuming it is though), but it runs. Now would this be worth buying more if its a 76? Also what are some of the avantages/disadvantages if its an 86 or a 76? I would like some opionions so I dont waste my time going to look at it. Also, would a truck a833 fit in an a-body? Im assuming its a np trans, which I would not want in a car though. |

'76 is solid lifter. '86 is hydraulic and the hydraulic cam in pretty wimpy. The '76 may be forged crank or it may be cast. '86 is cast. Nothing wrong with the cast crank. In fact it's lighter and revs a little quicker. The long A833OD can be made to fit, but it's work. Read the 4-speed article. http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-spee ... speed1.htm |

$100.00? who cares, just buy it. Especially if it runs and has the trans attached. Sooner or later these motors will start to run out. |

Is the hydraulic ok to use everyday, because I dont want to hassle with it, Im planning on swapping it into my car, because my current one runs a little rough. Also, can my 74 tune up stuff (cap, rotor, etc.) swap over to the later engines? |

Yes, but if the engine is an '86 you'll need to swap distributors. The spark plug wires won't need dust boots as the later head doesn't have spark plug tubes.

When Reed and I put the '83 engine in my Satellite, it ran just as well as the '73 engine I had in it. Same power, same mpg...just no valve adjusting, which is actually kind of nice for a daily driver. Hope you have better luck with yours...mine started smoking after a few months of use. The distributer, engine mounts, intake/exhaust, carb, power steering pump, everything will swap onto the newer engine. The lower alternator bracket will be different from cars to trucks, so you will also need to swap those over. You'll also need your car oil pan. |
