When I first tried turning over my car (1978 Volare super six) and it didn't start, I paused and waiting for the starter to stop spinning, and hit the key again and all there was was a very fast clicking noise. So, I turned the key to ON and jumped it across the posts on the starter, it clicked a for a few seconds, and then starting turning over like normal and started. I then cleaned up the battery posts which were quite corroded, and since then I have started it just fine (with no clicking) 3 times. Could this mean the starter is going bad? or a relay of some sort? or did simply cleaning up the battery posts fix it?

Bad connection not allowing enough amperage to turn the engine over. A very common problem if you neglect your charging system. Putting lubricated donuts over the battery posts will help to eliminate the corrosion.

Go get some felt donuts at your local auto parts and try to clean up the posts with a battery post cleaner. It has a built in wire brush to clean them and the clamps.
