So, perhaps this is an odd question but I will ask it anyway...and I know the answer depends on all sorts of stuff...

How do you folks start your Slanted rigs? Specifically, do you two pump the carb and wait 10 seconds to start, etc. My Weber seems to like three pumps, and a 15 second wait to start on the first crank...

I am wondering what others do...presumably the long manifold runners on the intake might make starting a bit more finicky than if they were short...

'71 Dart with '63 Stromberg 1bbl carb-

Cold engine: Stomp gas to floor once. Take foot off gas. Turn key. Engine starts and stays running after one to three compressions. Kick accelerator to knock fast idle cam down, shift into gear, drive off.

Hot engine: hold gas pedal about 1/4 of the way down to ventilate intake manifold. Turn key. Engine starts and stays running after one to three compressions. Release gas pedal, shift into gear, drive off.

I have an electric choke Holley 390 4bbl on an Offy intake. Cold start I push the pedal down about 1/4 full travel to set the choke and crank until it starts. The car does not see frequent service so it may take several seconds cranking to get enough fuel to start. If the car was driven recently it will start right away. Once the engine is running smoothly I tap the pedal to reduce the idle speed and then drive off. Hot or warm starts I put the pedal down about 1/4-1/3 and it usually starts right away. Some times I turn the ignition on for a few seconds to cause the choke to open somewhat as the electric choke always closes more than is needed when the engine is warm and shut off.

Holley 1920 carb with stock choke:

Cold start: one pump shot to set the choke, let off and turn key. On the first compression stroke and it starts with a bang and fires up. Let it run for a few seconds until the idle drops, put it in gear and drive off.

Hot start after heat soak: crack the throttle plates a hair to let some new air in but not enough for a pump shot, turn key and bang it starts up as fast as I can get my hand off the key.

Using regular gas, ram air intake taking air from behind the grill and in front of the engine compartment, and 0-30 Mobil 1.

The starter never gets a work out anymore.........like before when the engine was stock and untuned.

Holley 390 4v electric choke with delay thremistor, Clifford intake with home made hydronic hot spot & headers. Car is not run daily, may sit for a week between starts, to several months.

Cold: depress peddle half to 3/4 th. to floor to set the choke, release, and crank it over. Starts on first few compressions. Quit often the idle will halter requiring slight blipping during the first few seconds of cold idle. I think the choke is slow to open that first 3/16th inch, and or the fuel level is a bit low in the bowl after sitting for several days.

Sometimes it is reluctant to come off of high idle during cool to cold weather. this is due to the choke delay thermistor slowing the opening of the choke based on coolant temperature.

Warm: no peddle pushing, crank over a few compressions, when catches, a blip or two to clear if electric choke has reset.

In all cases I can drive away after a few seconds of idling hot or cold. This was not the case before installing the hot spot, and thermistor. This car was so cold blooded that I would get carburetor ice below 45 degrees, and 9 mpg.
