Post subject:  Brake Lights Sticking On

Taking the trash out last night, I was treated to the site of my '64 Valiant's tail light bulbs blaring in the darkness through my now-molten tail light lenses. It would appear that the metal actuator at the top of the brake pedal is sticking. I can pull back on it (with gloves because it was blazing hot) and it pops back and turns off. Every time I press the brakes though, it's stuck on again.

While I'm searching for a new driver's side lens, is there anything I can do to fix this little problem? I was thinking maybe WD-40, but I wanted to ask before I made it worse.

Thanks for your assistance.

Don't hit it with WD-40. You need a new brake light switch. Original type from Old Car Parts Northwest or a Standard-BlueStreak SLS-147 plus a standard ¼" female spade terminal on the brake lamp wire (the original switch has a round rear terminal; the SLS-147 has a ¼" male spade). Make sure to adjust it properly and remember not to use the brake light switch as a pedal stop, or the new one will be destroyed in short order.

Bummer about the lens...the '64-'65-'66 Valiant and Barracuda lenses, because of the way they sit above the bulbs, are quite prone to melting. :-(

That's what I thought. Thanks, Dan. I'll give OCPNW a call.

Yeah, it's a real bummer about the tail lights. They were actually in fairly decent shape. Just another thing to add to the list. *sigh*

Ordered an aftermarket from OCPNW 13 bucks shipped to my door. Not too shabby.
