Hi,

What is the purpose of capillary tube? Is it to allow a little bit of coolant or air through to the heater core?

I'm curious because I'm replacing the valve on one of my valiants with carquest #217833. I was turned on to it by Doc Dutra's friend, who's name escapes me I'm embarrassed to say. It doesn't have the tube. I'm sure it's fine but my curiosity was peaked.

The carquest valve was only $20! Better than the NOS valve on ebay for $170 for sure.

Thanks,

John D

No. It works like all other capillary tubes: it's sealed, and filled with a substance that has a high coefficient of thermal expansion. Freon or methylene chloride or somesuch. It modulates the valve opening in response to the temperature of coolant flowing through the valve.

I'm not seeing that number come up. More info/details please. Whatever you can supply — pictures, a brand name, call up CarQuest and ask what the valve fits, etc.

$170 is substantially overpriced for a '60-'62 A-body heater valve.

Additional info on '60-'62 A-body heater valves here (with links to other relevant threads)

Right on Dan, your knowledge always amazes me. I never would have guessed that was the purpose.

Why does the valve need to be modulated? Does the cable control not open it fully, and the tube takes it the rest of the way? I don't completely understand it yet.

I'll post pics of the valve when I get off work. I asked the guy at the store what the valve is supposed to go on and he said he thought it was just a universal type valve.

It's very simple, just a ball valve with two barbed ends, a mounting plate and a flat spot to attach the cable to. The whole thing is black plastic. I couldn't find any pictures of it online either.

Thanks!

John D

One super extra sharp focus pic of the box:

Pics were taken with my phone. I hope they show enough detail.

What do you think Dan?

Thanks,
