 Post subject: Stock or RV cam?

The victim is a 66 Dart 270, 4 door, auto, it will be my wifes daily driver and only car unless we are in my 73 Dart.

The stock 225 is out and torn down after I had the imput shaft from the old oil pump bust off in the block. I got the old shaft out with a slide hammer and decided to check the 114,470 mile bearings. There are no fingernail catching grooves in the crank but new rod and main bearings are on the way, I have a rebuilt 2bbl, new oil pump, dist, HEI, alt, fuel pump, gasket kit, and water pump all ready to go.
I am not pulling the pistons as the motor had good compression, didn't smoke and was a strong runner before the oil pump started to die and busted in half also there are no cracks or grooves in the cylinder walls. This is just a quick gasket/bearing and cam rebuild to get the car back on the road. The only other thing I am doing is cleaning the carbon off the valves and installing a new head gasket. No porting or any other head work on this motor (thats what the other 2 motors are for).

The big decision right now is the cam. I called up Delta cams in Tacoma, WA (I have bought all my cams from them since I was 12 years old, yeah 12) and they have a stock regrind for $28.50 or an "RV" cam for $44.66 lifters are only $1.75 each.

So the question is... Daily driver, stock 225, HEI ignition with a 2bbl. Stock cam or "RV" cam?

Can't be answered intelligently without detailed specs on what they are calling their "RV" cam. Could really be anything. Also would like to see (their) specs on the stock cam, so we can compare straight across.

Just called them back, didn't get a whole lot of info but here is what I got.

Stock-

Intake= 198 @ 50
Exhaust= 203
406/414



Stage 1 cam-

Intake= 212 @ 50
435 lift




Stage 2 cam-

Intake= 220 @50
440 lift

With-out the cam's specs, it is hard to say what you will be getting.
And watch-out on replacement oil pumps, many of the replacement pumps sold today have real soft drive gears that fail with-in the first few thousand miles of use.

Sounds like the stock '71-'80 cam, which is a little better than the original stock '66 cam. That's predictable; everyone grinds to the '71-'80 pattern.

Sounds maybe like a grind similar to the Comp 252, which is not a cam I'd run, but could be something else altogether. I'd want to see more info on it. Exhaust duration, f'rinstance!

So basically for 28 bucks their "stock" cam will work just fine for a 2bbl daily driver? We aren't going for all out, balls to the walls power with this one just a good driver that is decent on gas and will get out of it's own way.

I have a late model slant (83 pick up motor) with a 4bbl, and headers that will be getting the "go fast" cam later.

The pump I am going to use is one of the 4 I got during the Pepboys closeout. I got the last 3 nation wide and one from ebay for dirt cheap. I have been running one on my daily driver 73 dart for he last 15,000 miles and haven't had one problem with it.
They can't be any worse than the plastic gear that comes on the reman distributes like the one I picked up today that I always have to clean up all the casting flash with a razor blade.

You betchya. Spend the extra $ on a degree wheel instead and get that stock cam installed perfectly.

There's a world of difference between the stresses that an oil pump gear is subjected to and that of the distributor drive gear. Plastic distributor gears are the OEM standard and easily last in excess of 100,000 miles. An oil pump gear on the other hand, has to work against the back pressure of the oiling system and the contact area is very small. Doc knows, more than just about anyone else on the board, what he is talking about.

Oh I know he does, he is one of the gods of slants! (speaking of slant six gods, anyone know if Wilford Day is still alive and in St. George, UT? )

I have been on and off this site for years and I'm a left over from .com (r.i.p. :( ) I'm just saying that I haven't had or seen any oil pump gears kick the bucket during regular non...ummm..uuuhhhhh.."spirited" driving conditions. Especially since my 2 darts are 4 doored daily drivers there won't be any neutral drops at 5000 rpm :twisted:

Well consider yourself lucky, about 18 years ago on a recently new rebuild, I lost a oil pump drive gear (New pump installed in the rebuild) I had only a gauge, no idiot light. This happened about 1/2 way from Bend, Oregon to Burns, Oregon at 2 AM.
DO NOT trust the new pump drive gear!!

I had them regrind my stock 1974 cam for $35. and am running it now. It is the same grind as a Erson 254. It is a great cam! I have about 60,000 plus miles on it in the last 2.5 years. Lots of low end torque.

I installed it at 4 degrees advance.
